Welcome Back!

The second Grade team looks forward to working with your children.

Language Arts
In Reader’s Workshop, the children will learn what it takes to become good readers. We will hunt for books that are ‘just right’ for us. The students will use their reading response journals to keep track of thoughts as they read their independent books.
Skills being taught this month include making connections with stories read and story mapping. In phonics, the children will learn closed vowel patterns.
In Writer’s Workshop the students will create small moment narratives. We will use adjectives to help us.
Math
We are very excited to continue our exploration of Everyday Math. In September, we will practice grouping numbers by 2s, 5s and 10s. We will write number stories that will help us with our addition stories. Also, we will review double facts and families.
We will use fun math games to reinforce the skills being taught. The children love playing them and don’t realize they are learning, too.
Science
We are Botanists in Second Grade. We will look at the life cycle of plants and will know the different parts of plants. We will visit the Bartlett Arboretum in the Fall and again in the Spring to compare and contrast the different types of plants we see. We will explore different types of soils, some that can be found around Connecticut and some samples that come from Texas and Maine
