Homework Reminders

Each week, your child will bring home a Reading Log.  This will give you the opportunity to not only enjoy reading to/with your child, but to find out what he or she has understood from the story.  Your child should draw the picture and you can record his or her words.

Remember, oral language (speaking out loud) and routines are a very important part of Kindergarten.  You can help by talking to your child often, and having him or her tell you about events or experiences you may have shared.  Try to keep school work organized so you won’t be overwhelmed in the morning.  And please, check their folder every day for homework and important notes.

Kindergarten News

The children are learning their way around Hart Magnet School. They are responsible for doing jobs to help keep our classroom organized and feel like a second home.

Literacy:
Literacy goals include letter identification, sight words and rhyming words. Children are learning the names of upper and lowercase letters as well as the sounds for each letter. You can help with:
1. flash cards: letters and sight words
2. reading alphabet books
3. magnetic letters on the refrigerator
4. recognizing letters in environmental print (cereal boxes, signs, etc.)
5. simple rhyming pairs: cat/hat, pig/wig

When writing, please encourage your child to form the letters correctly, following the alphabet sent home at Open House.

The children are discovering the alphabet during our Reader’s and Writer’s Workshops. They are identifying the beginning, middle and end to story read aloud and even stories the children write themselves.

Math:
Math lessons have the students learning to ask survey questions and graphing data collected. You can help by playing counting games such as those described in the Home Links. Please take advantage of the math games found on www.everydaymathonline.com (passwords were sent home).

Science:
Our little scientists are discovering the world around them. They are learning how seasonal changes affect weather, animals, plants, and themselves. The children are observing fish and learning about animal behaviors.
