Homework

Second Grade homework is very important.  Through the homework, the children practice the skills that have been previously taught. Here are a few ideas that can help make this year successful.

       *     Have a quiet place for your child to sit and focus on the work.

       *     Since all homework skills have been taught, your child should be able to complete the work independently.  Please make sure that you check over the work to see that it is correct and written neatly.

       *     Check the Homework Folder Monday - Thursday to make sure you do not miss any permission slips or updates.

       *     In addition to the written work, the children should be reading 20 minutes nightly.  Research shows that the way to become a good reader is to read, read, read!

February News

Literacy

We will finish up our Nonfiction Unit in Reading. The children are identifying the different parts of nonfiction texts and using them appropriately. They should be using some of these components while completing the Nature Projects. Also, we will finish up our letter writing unit. The children have enjoyed writing different types of letters.

This month we will start practicing for the Second Grade Spring DRP test. The students will be introduced to the Cloze reading method. They will read the passages and find the words that best fit in the blanks. They will also underline the ‘proof.’

 Math

In Unit 7, we will explore number patterns that will help us prepare for multiplication and division. Different math lessons involve the collection, representation and interpretation of the data collected. The students will make frequency tables, line plots and bar graphs from real-life data. They will also find the median and mode in this data.

We will also be taking a mid-year assessment on February 6. The children will be tested on skills from Unit 1-Unit 6.

Science

After studying humus, clay and sand, the students will explore the connection between plants, roots and these soils. Students will find that different soils can affect plant growth. Next, we will focus on how water percolates through soil. We will pour water over the different soil samples and see what happens. Students will realize that the amount of water in a particular soil affects how well plants grow in certain areas. We will also revisit our compost bin to see how the worms helped our soil.
