Stamford and State Grade Level Expectations

Literacy- In Reading Workshop, the children will learn what it takes to become good readers. Children will learn to find a book that is “just right.” We will also learn how to take care of our classroom library. Response journals will be used to write down their thoughts as they are reading their independent reading books.

In Writing, students will decorate their Writer’s Notebooks and begin write stories based on our own experiences. We will also use personal experiences and different stories to make connections!

Math- We are very excited to continue our exploration of Everyday Math. This month, we will create our Numbers All Around Museum. We will also practice extending number patterns and begin our length of day project!

Students will learn and practice fun math games to support the skills being taught. The children enjoy playing these games and most of the time do not even realize how much they are learning!

Science- In September, we will begin our unit on rocks and minerals. During this unit we will perform different tests (hardness, light, magnetisim) in order to figure out the names of different rocks and minerals. We will also investigate which minerals we use on a daily basis.

Social Studies- This month we will be learning about Geography. We will explore both cardinal directions and intermediate directions. We will also learn how to read a map!

Homework

In continuing our efforts to be responsive to the needs of our students, the third grade team has implemented a homework policy.  At the start of the year, time was devoted each day to clearly define our homework expectations and to teach our students how to complete their homework successfully.  This daily practice will certainly make homework moreeasily understood.

Third graders must read for at least 20 minutes every night.

If at any time you are unclear about an assignment or your child's work, please contact your child's teacher.  It is our hope that parents and teachers will work together to ensure that all of Hart School's third graders become successful learners.
